are they not heroes still
are they not heroes still
who lagged behind
nursing lonely
broken hearts
their bitterness spilling
in cutting and splaying words
love is rarely kind
perhaps love is only duty
sacrifices unwillingly done
and smiles lie forgotten
in unpursued dreams
while you live yours
unwittingly
leaving their lives behind
are they not heroes still
if they are unremembered
invisible like dust in corners
who sweeps them away
we see only stars and glitter
the mournful poorly meek
who blesses their kind
if they are not heroes still

the heroes are the ones who are not remembered. For they do what they do with pure motives, not because of the recognition. For after all, our Father in heaven will recognise the heroes.

Epitaph on an Army of Mercenaries
from Last Poems (Verse XXXVI)
These, in the day when heaven was falling
The hour when earth's foundations fled,
Followed their mercenary calling,
And took their wages, and are dead.
Their shoulders held the sky suspended;
They stood, and earth's foundations stay;
What God abandoned, these defended,
And saved the sum of things for pay.
A E Housman (1859-1936)
Sometimes, I think it reminds me of a few Singaporean teachers.

They say, "Those who cannot do, teach." Haha.
Life is so much about failed ambitions and doing the dutiful and the needful - often for no other apparent reason but to keep things going. It is little wonder that there are so many adults who are bitter and unhappy about life. It helps to think that perhaps somewhere there is someone who takes these things we do into account.
On another note, mercenaries are soldiers who fight for the money, with no care for the righteousness of what they are fighting for. They are generally thought of as being somewhat amoral - which is often worse than being immoral. In the eyes of some, they are no better than paid assassins, perhaps worse because in war, you kill the bystander as well. Despite the French, it is odd that anyone would think them heroes.

"Those who can, do; those who can't, teach; those who can't teach, teach teachers..." *grin*
However, what is it that they 'can'?
Supposing we say "Those who can bear nonsense, do so; those who can't bear nonsense, teach; those who can't teach nonsense, teach teachers..." then it all makes sense!

Sadly, no, mythical, it doesn't make the sense you wish. I wish. There's another saying, "The A students work (as architects, doctors, teachers, whatever) for the B students who manages the firm (and go find the jobs) who works for the C students who eventually become the client."
It's about the wonderful symmetry of life. Did I not tell you that God mocks our cleverness? Haha.
